Understanding Multiplexing is an introductory course designed to provide participants with an overview of different multiplexing technologies used in the cable industry. Understanding how these technologies work is key to understanding the way services are delivered to the customers. The course looks at the different versions of time division multiplexing, frequency division multiplexing and wave division multiplexing. We will also explore the basics of using fiber optics to transmit data.

Requirements for Successful Course Completion:

  • Module quizzes 70% or higher
  • Course final test 70% or higher

You may take the course final test up to 3 times.


Format:

 

The course is delivered online via the SCTE·ISBE virtual classroom, or it may be completed in ½ day (4 hours) as an onsite.

 

Online learners interact with web-based course materials and complete assessments (quizzes) at a time that is convenient for them. Learners may also contact the instructor when they have questions.

 

SCTE·ISBE recommends learners spend approximately 1 - 2 hours per week, on average, completing the various course activities in order to maximize the learning benefits. 100% of the schedule is determined by the learners (interacting with online materials, completing quizzes and a final exam).

Module 01 – Multiplexing Signals

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify the multiplexing technologies used in the cable industry
  • Differentiate between different time division multiplexing technologies
  • Identify how time division multiplexing is used in T1 circuits
  • Identify the protocols used with time division multiplexing


Module 02 – Optical Links and Wave Division Multiplexing

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Define the characteristics of optical links, fiber structure, and transmission properties
  • Define the characteristics of optical cable, along with categories and color coding
  • Differentiate between wave division multiplexing technologies
