SCTE•ISBE Energy Management Subcommittee and Energy 2020 Plenary Meeting: Session 1 - Technology Partners Panel

Program Mission:
To envision and enable what energy will look like in cable in the year 2020.  Targeting maximum customer uptime and enabling capacity growth via successful organizational, customer and environmental energy solutions.

Program Goals

  • Reduce power consumption 20% on a unit basis
  • Reduce energy costs by 25% on a unit basis

  • Reduce grid dependency by 5%

Energy 2020 Initiatives:
Leveraging the input of U.S. and international operators through Energy 2020, SCTE has identified initiatives across five categories:  Facilities, Plant, Operations, Technology, and Marketing/Regulatory. Join the SCTE•ISBE Standards Program where members work together to take each initiative from concept through completion.

Energy 2020 Focus Areas

Edge Facilities and HFC Networks Represent the Greatest Opportunity for Energy Cost Avoidance

According to detailed SCTE•ISBE analysis of energy usage of a cross section of major operators, between 73% and 83% of cable’s overall energy consumption is by hubs and headends, as well as the access network power supplies powering the active equipment on the HFC network. Cable operator and vendor collaboration and innovation are needed to drive efficiency in these areas.

Energy 2020 Beginnings
Energy 2020 and the SCTE•ISBE Energy Management Program are the next steps in the evolution of comprehensive energy strategies for the cable industry.  The program incorporates initial work by SCTE•ISBE’s Smart Energy Management Initiative (SEMI), particularly landmark remarks by retired Comcast executive Mark Coblitz.  In a 2012 SEMI presentation, Coblitz championed the concept of energy efficiency as a way to ensure that operators would have sufficient power to meet current and future business needs.
